How can I become a CELTA Tutor?

Information for teachers interested in becoming a CELTA Tutor 

If you would like to train to become a CELTA Tutor (sometimes known as a 'CELTA Trainer'), you will need to:

• Be attached to a Cambridge English CELTA Centre. 
  
  
• Be recommended for training by an authorised centre (ideally, you will have been working with the authorised centre, so they are familiar with your background and experience and can provide an appropriate training programme for your skills).
  
  
• Hold a Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Cambridge DTEFLA, or Trinity Dip. TESOL qualification. If you hold a different qualification your centre must submit a transcript of the award to us for consideration before training can be approved. The qualification(s) must be a post initial English Language Teaching qualification at Level 7 and must include a practical component.

• Have substantial (normally 5 years) classroom-based ELT experience preferably in more than one context. Experience of teaching a range of levels and different types of class is a requirement.

• Be able to demonstrate professional involvement in ELT.

How long does the CELTA trainer/tutor-in-training take?

To become CELTA Tutor most applicants need to undertake a full training course. This involves following a CELTA Training program over the duration of a CELTA course. The training may take place intensively over one course or extensively over a number of courses. 

There are no free-standing CELTA training courses and training is always linked to an approved CELTA centre.

After training has been successfully completed, you would be appointed as an Assistant Tutor on a future course. Assistant Tutors will have continued support during initial courses to consolidate their training. This should be provided by the original training centre.
