To ensure the audio works smoothly for Cambridge English Qualifications Digital for young learners, please ensure the headphones are set up correctly by following these steps:
Ensure you only have one set of headphones enabled
You must ensure only the headphones the candidate will be using for the test is enabled on the computer, and no other headphones.
It is common for laptops to have built-in speakers and microphones. These will need to be disabled for the test.
Please find steps for checking this for your Operating System here:
Windows
These steps are written for Windows 10. If you're using a different version of Windows, the steps may be slightly different. Please speak to your Local IT staff if you require additional help.
Follow these steps to ensure only the headphones being used for the test are enabled:
1. Ensure the headphone to be used for the test is plugged into the computer
2. Open the Windows Settings menu, and click on System
3. Click on Sound
4. Click the Manage sound devices link
5. Click on any output devices that are not going to be used for the test, and click Disable
6. Once done, only the headphones being used for the test should show as active under Output devices. After the test, you can come back here to re-enable any devices as required
Chrome OS
1. Open Chrome then click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner
2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. Scroll down and click on Advanced
4. In the Privacy and security section, click on Site Settings
5. Click on Additional permissions
6. Click on Media management
7. Toggle on Choose default media devices
8. Click on the dropdown under Default audio output device and select the headphones being used for the test
9. Close the Settings menu and the changes will take effect.
Adjust Device and headphone Volume
There are two places where the volume of the test can be controlled. You will need to ensure the volume is turned up in all of these locations and remains at a suitable level throughout the test:
- PC's / laptop's / Chromebook volume - ensure this is set to a suitable level before starting the test
- Volume controls physically on the headphones - ensure this is set to a suitable level before starting the test
Prior to starting the test, the test taker can set the volume. Please ensure this is set to an appropriate level.
The volume in the test can be changed at any point by pressing the Esc key, and then using the slider to raise or lower. Press the right arrow to continue
Audio Captions
Please ensure audio captions / subtitles are disabled on any devices used for the test.
