Exam format and preparation
Is the exam format the same as for the paper-based exam?
Yes, the exam format is the same as for the paper-based version but the Listening, Reading and Writing components are taken on the computer. The Speaking component is face-to-face, the same as paper-based version.
How can learners prepare for the exam?
We offer a range of preparation materials:
- Handbook for teachers
- Free sample tests
- Free practice activities in Cambridge One
- Walkthrough videos - Pre A1 Starters and A1 Movers
- An information for candidates booklet (to follow)
In addition, teachers and learners can use all the preparation materials designed for paper-based version.
How can I help learners with digital skills?
The sample tests are a great way to familiarise learners with the digital format. There are also practice activities and videos available. You can use the sample tests.
Entries
How do I submit entries?
Entries are submitted on Cambridge English for Centres and use the Making booking and managing entries article for information.
What are the deadlines?
Entries must be submitted two working days before the exam. Check the Schedule on CECP to find out the actual closing date.
How do I request Special Arrangements?
Since the tests have no set times, there is no need to request extra time as a Special Arrangement. For other available arrangements see this article.
Can candidates still be withdrawn after the KAD if they don't take the test?
Entries must be withdrawn before the Entry Closing date otherwise you will still be charged for them.
Exam day
What is the role of the invigilator?
The test needs to be invigilated as other Cambridge English qualifications. The role of the invigilator is to maintain the security and integrity of the test. They invigilate candidates and manage the test timing. Refer to the Cambridge English Qualifications Digital for young learners Exam Day Booklet.
How many exam sessions can I have?
There is no limit; it is the centre's decision depending on available resources.
Is there a Speaking component?
Yes but the Speaking test is face-to-face. Speaking marks are entered directly in CECP in the same way as for paper-based tests.
Do the candidates start the test themselves?
It is advised that the Invigilator launches the Test Player URL and completes the device check. The candidate should then take over from the audio check screen so they can ensure it’s set to an appropriate level for them. They are then able to enter their password and start the test.
Can candidates take the test in their own time?
Invigilators should encourage the candidates to start each component together, at the same time, to minimise disruption during the test and to ensure that the test is completed in a reasonable time.
Is there any way to pause the test if necessary?
The test does not have a built-in timer, as such there is no option or need to pause. Instead, the Invigilator should manually time the test to ensure they have finished within the maximum allowed time as per the Exam Day Booklet. The candidate can be allowed more time if they had to leave the test for a valid reason.
Can candidates with different levels share the same room?
Whilst this is technically possible, it is not advisable as the candidates will finish the test at different times and it may be disruptive to those who are still sitting the test.
How can you check candidate answers have been submitted?
The results upload to Cambridge at the end of the test and a “Well Done. This is the end of the test” screen appears once the upload is complete. If there are any technical issues and you suspect the results may not have uploaded, please get in touch with our Helpdesk and we’ll check we have received them.
Results
When are results released?
Results are released 5 to 10 days after the exam date.
Will candidates get a digital certificate?
Candidates will receive an online Statement of Results with personalised feedback and a printed certificate with shields.
Can candidates have a certificate ceremony?
Printed certificates are available, the same as for paper-based version. They are issued with the new name and with some changes in the Can-do statements.
Can I print certificates?
No. All certificates are printed by Cambridge English.
How is the Reading and Writing component marked?
The questions are designed to reflect the age and level of the candidates. Responses are automarked, using high facilitation, comprehensive answer keys. This is thoroughly reviewed to ensure that all possible correct answers are included.
Technical requirements
What are the minimum technical requirements?
See the Minimum and recommended specifications article.
What devices can I use?
You can use PCs / laptops with Windows and Chromebooks. The test cannot be run on tablets or mobile devices. See the Minimum and recommended specifications article for full details.
Are candidates allowed to bring their own devices?
To ensure security and a smooth test-taking experience, it isn’t possible for candidates to use their own laptops. However, if students have school-approved/maintained devices that they are allowed to take home for homework, those devices are appropriate for the test provided they meet the minimum specifications. They can also bring their own headphones. If you allow candidates to bring their own headphones, which can include 'in ear' headphones, ensure that you inform them in advance about what is compatible with your equipment. If you allow candidates to bring wireless headphones:
- Ask them to fully charge them before bringing them to the exam.
- Ask them to leave them switched off and on their desks for the other components.
- Double check your system's compatibility, for example, in case there is a limit of 7 devices or fewer via Bluetooth.
